The thing is to research lots of books and to get a good theoretical understanding of how magic works. You can then identify the common thread that runs through them all. If you strip away some of the superficial upper layers you will find that many of the techniques that are used are the same or similar throughout. For example you will find that many books give contradicting positions for each of the quarters when invoking. In truth it doesnt matter what direction you use, as long as it works for you, however having said this the most common useage of east=air, south=fire, west=water, north=earth, will give you a more potent foundation on which to work as this is the most common form used worldwide, across many traditions thusly creating a strong astral imprint. Once you have learnt then you can apply in practical application. Do the ritual etc everyday to find what works and resonates best with you, then continue the practice everday to build up the astral imprint. Unfortunatley it seems that many books on paganism/witchcraft, tend to have a bit of an airy fairy approach and seem very reluctant to go into the theory of ritual, they seem to scrape the surface and little more. This can lead to confusion in begginners, as they dont ever touch the underlying principles, once you learn them you can discern the rubbish from the truely potent. Ill give you a list of authors i have found useful,
Melita Denning and Osbourne Phillips Israel Regardie Henry Cornelius Agrippa Donald Michael Kraig John Michael Greer Robert Bruce Dion Fortune Manly P Hall
Within these books you will not find anything to do with the religious element of paganism, and very little to do directly with pagan traditions, however you will find explanations of the highest grade that will help you with regards to magic theory and practice, all of which can be applied to the pagan faiths. I myself come from a ceremonial magic background and have found that the explanations offered there compared to the ones i have read in some books on paganism tend to be a lot more detailed and complete, and very focused on the subject. Again any of what is learnt there can be applied to the pagan faiths. If you want to learn about paganism in general, Isaac Bonewits writes well researched material. Hope this helps.

MM well I agree I read and read and ead when I started this research, after being exorcised in the christian church for being a witch in a former life I thought I best find out who I was, and why i was killed for my faith! I started with Marian Green book on a A WITCH ALONE, and found ehrs the best for me, as I wanted to find out the old ways of the village wisewoman. I then went onto RONALD HUTTON, and STATIONS OF THE SUN, this is for the more intelectual, and i fgound it too hard to read, THE WHITE GODDESS, i tried next, then I read TERESA MOOREY s bookelts that showed me the way for me, explanations of different enwage pathways, also pointers tow ards wot periodicals I could purchase inh UK. I continued reading the book list Marian green, instructed we read, at the end of each of ehr chapters, in A WITCH ALONE, and found this gav em a thorough grounding.... However then I started ahving my own thoughts, on how I would do things, and so started making notes, and although I never did spells as wychdes do, I started a very interesting research, which ahs lasted over 15yrs, and taken me, in book form, all through the ages, and all through different ways of paganism. Its all a matter of personal choice, go to the local library, and borrow the books. Some of them you will need to wear plastic gloves, as they6 give off bad vibes, many boooks I had to take back to the library, as they were unclean! I got them instead secondhand off amazon.co.uk marketplace, and then resold them, when I had finsished my research. Be wary of books, that tell u, do things this, or do that, or have long long prayers, and photos of who did wot with whom, some of it is utter hogwash.... I was appalled to learn that witches had got together and made things up, and deliberatly led astray 10000s of earnest seekers.... The main thing is research, tune into the moon and sun, and nature, and weather pattersn, if your meant to be a wych or druid or follower of the oldest of old, it will appear to u .
