I have had the same experience whilst I was living in France. Has anyone given you something which made you feel 'not quite right' about? Mine was a painting of a religious artifact which, being very catholic, was definitely not my cup of tea. I didn't think there was anything particularly weird about it so just put it behind my settee. Thereafter the black cat - a rather large one, almost panther size - started roaming around. After a while my friend and I were discussing this and we decided that the painting may be to blame. I took it outside, did a blessing ceremony on it and then burnt it - or tried to. It would not catch even though it was paper so I buried it instead. The cat disappeared.
