Although I have been interested in the Craft for a few years now, I have only recently decided to start learning. I purchased an amethyst pendulum (I wanted a pendulum and was drawn to the amethyst one). I drew horizontal, vertical and semi circular lines on a large piece of paper and held the pendulum over each one in turn. Without any real concentation, when I held the pendulum above each line, it vigorously traced each line - with no movement from me.
Is this usual?

hi how was it u got the pendulum to move by itself as i have crystal pendulum and it has never moved, no matter how hard i try although i have put the box with it in in the cupbord and i have later gon into the cupbord and found the box standing on its side, and im the only one that knows it is there

Hi Don't know if this is any help or even if you'll see this reply as the post has been up for some time! I've been using a pendulum for some time now and I find it very helpful as long as I take care to protect myself first. I always ask for the Angels to watch over me, in particular Archangel Michael, and for them to guide me to the answers they want me to know. I then ask two questions that can only be answered with yes or no. For instance I might ask if my name is .... and let the pendulum swing in answer. Usually it spins in a circle so that is my sign for yes. Then I ask if I'm a swedish super model and it always says no (much to my disppointment!!)  It usually swings back and forth for no. Lastly I ask if it's all right for me to ask some questions and most of the time it's ok but occasionally it says no so I just say thank you and put it away. I have been using one of my pendulums a lot quite recently to help a friend who was feeling very lost and it really helped but there was one evening when I asked if I could ask something on her behalf and it said no. I asked if there was something the Angels wanted me to know and it said yes and, to cut a long story short, they were trying to tell me that my husband was in some trouble. Low and behold the next day he rang me from the other side of the world having just had to prevent a colleague from harming himself, possibly even killing himself! Sorry if I've rambled on but stick with your pendulum, give it some time and it may just surprise you. Blessed be )O( Kelda x

I have a black banded Agate one, but it carries on like a screaming dishcloth, although it is reliable lol, I also bought a maple wood one that was made in New England, however, I have made two myself, one of Holly, the other Ivy from wood from my sacred space in the forest and they are much more relaxed and gentler to use, perhaps you need to try a different sort.

pendulums aren't independant thinking devices, so they will only move while you're holding the string/chain/cord.
The way a pendulum works is by your brain causing tiny muscular movements in your arm, hand and fingers causing the pendulum to move.
This doesn't mean that pendulums aren't reliable, they work from your own sub-conscious psychic impressions.
It is very normal for the pendulum to track the lines and is a sign that the pendulum is responsive to you.
Another test is to ask it to show you 'yes' and 'no' so you know what to expect while dowsing, and also to show you various objects in your surroundings

You can buy a cloth with 'yes, no, etc on it too, perhaps that might help you along. Obviously you have to be holding them suspended, the ones I made myself have cords on them otherwise they wouldn't actually 'be' pendulums, would they

Greetings all,
My best friend gave me a pendulum as a present at Yule, but I've not yet found enough time to sit down and try and work with it! To be honest, I am a little wary about trying it out, but really excited at the same time :D I've read through the thread, does anyone have any other tips before I try working with mine?

Blessings :) Maybe hold it in your hands for a little bit so it can connect with you or you can carry it around with you in your pocket, so you and the pendulum can form a connection.

Merry meet Beaker, I have used pendulams for many many years and have found that initially you need to cleanse it regularly adn when you first get it (remember a pendulum chooses you not the other way round). Cleansing can be done in many ways: 1. Sea salt dissolved in water and the pendulum left over night 2. The pendulum can be left in a geode fo amethyst over night 3. The pendulum can be left overnight in direct moonlight adn then used I have found it better to keep my new pendulum on me for a few days, i usually tuck it in my bra and keep it with me to allow it to attract my vibrations before it starts to work for me You also have to ask the right questions, ones that need a direct yes or no, tester questions are a good start that you already know the answer to. I have found that while the pendulum has never lied to me I have been able to influence it to swing to the answer I want so I never ask questions that i am desperate to find an answer to. Strange I know but the disappointment is too great to bear. Also i have noticed that different pendulums swing different ways dependant on the stone and often spirit may not want you to know the answer to your question, how else would we learn. This life is not a test or we would have been given better instructions at birth. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.... Don't let any one else touch or use it and when not in use keep it in a small pouch or bag. Clear quartz is also a great stone to keep with it but if you do that stone also needs to be cleansed regularly. MM

I'm a bit late in coming into this topic but I would be very grateful for some advice. I was very fortunate as when I started dowsing over a year ago, I immediately got positive movements for 'yes', 'no', 'male', 'female', 'guardian spirit', 'soulmate' etc. etc. I realise that I should ask specific not vague questions but I now find that I only have to let my thoughts focus on one of the above, without speaking the question, and my pendulum moves accordingly. It's very difficult to empty my mind sufficiently so that I'm not anticipating a specific answer. Any suggestions from experienced dowsers amongst you? )O(

 I wouldn't say I was an experienced dowser, but I have used my wee rose quartz pendulum fairly frequently, and it gives excellent reliability. When using it, I always hold it for a while beforehand, then when ready I'll ask a simple question to allow it to become reattuned, then I'll start to request the answers to my questions. Like yourself, I allow the question to form in my mind, and I never speak it aloud. While holding the pendulum in my 'warm up' I always have some sound in the background ( an ocean sound cd or similar) to focus on, which helps me to gain a more meditative state, and I have always found this to be helpful for a successful reading. Yoo Hoo, Back again for another comment to the original question about pendulams. I have used my pendulum for many many years and have possibly a laissez faire relationship with them (please don't worry, I look after them and have a heavy amount of respect when I use them and don't abuse them). You see, they have never let me down because i have found out that it is about asking the right question and not asking a question that you have a predisposed answer to i.e. the answer you want as opposed what you don't want to hear. I learned my lesson about that. I have also found that that a pendulam will find you and not the other way around?  BB

I'm not sure about the pendulum finding you, but it makes sense does it not, when considering how it is used. I saw mine in a local Wiccan shop, and even though it has a slight flaw, it just felt so right when I held it compared to the others, so you may well be right! BBx

forgive me for not being a little clearer when I said the pendulum finds you. I didn't mean it had feet and ran to me, i meant when you visit crystal shops etc adn you handle them and feel the energy. Sorry

Aha, that makes sense, that's what happened to me, and I presume you also?! I thought you meant as in a gift or something! But wouldn't it be great if everything we required ( including sticky buns!) grew legs and ran to us!!!
