merry Meet everyone

Right i am very confused by this topic of calling oneself a "Christian" Wiccan... surely if you are following a religion , you should be one or the other and not a duel religion. I dunno if this is making sense but , if i remember correctly Christians hate Wiccans, witchcraft etc and so isn't it a bit odd to call yourself a "Christian", if you are also following wicca?? Confused Confused Surely this person should call themselves an "ecclectic" Pagan !!?? Its as if i coudl suddenly turn round and say I'm a "Jewish Witch" or a "Buddhist Jew" etc etc !! Should you actually mix religions up like this and label yourself as such or just stick to one religion entirely and call yourself an "Ecclectic" rather than point out that you are of two specific religions??

Could someone clear this up for me coz i'm mega confused Confused Huh I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic!! Laugh

I can't see how any christian can claim to be something else too as christianity doctrine is : You shall have no other gods but me.

Having said that, I do have a christian druid as a member of my forum and she is quite comfortable combining the two.

@ Storm Rune - My point exactly, if you are a Christian you can't be another religion too!! I don't think the christian would be too pleased about a person being a Christian Druid!! Confused

I can understand if a pagan labeled themselves as an "eccelctic" But not a CHRISTIAN WICCAN!! In my opinion i think its wrong! Don't know what you think though

Juniper - there's quite a few around on other forums and generally BigGrin

Christian Wiccan - in the strictest sense of the terms - is theologically impossible. As Storm Rune says, the Ten Commandments say: "You shall have no other gods but[before] me." and Wicca has its own Gods, obviously.

A Christian Witch, however, I'd have no problem with. After all, what is spellcraft at its core but prayer?

You could, I guess, follow what's publicly available on Wicca using Mary and Jesus as the Goddess and God. Which isn't Christianity anyway, since Mary was never deified but was only ever made a Saint. So it's still not technically Christian, nor would it be Wiccan....

But then, you could probably redefine Wiccan into something to fit with Christianity. After all, Wicca most certainly does not mean what it did originally! How many of us calling ourselves Wiccan have actually been initiated into a lingeaged Coven that traces back to Gardner, after all?

Ah, now I understand! I thought I'd missed an interesting debate on this forum. I quite agree with the views expressed as I'd have thought Christianity and Paganism were clearly mutually incompatible.

I do have a problem sometimes when kind and well-meaning friends, who may be unaware of my beliefs, give me small saints' medallions. I take the view that the spirit in which they're given is more important than the image. What do others think?Confused

Huh I have read of such things, people claiming to practise 'Christian Wicca' but I also fail to understand the logic, as to a Christian, Wicca would be blasphemy- to them we follow idolatrous Gods!
@JC-many pagan worshippers of old, when assmilated into Christianity, would blend their ancient Gods with Christian saints, in more recent times the slaves brought to America would disguise their Voudoun deities with images of those that their captors would be familiar with. I would probably politely refuse such an item, and gently inform them that it's not my beliefs, and leave it at that. I feel that religion is such a private thing.

Thank you for the wise advice, Lady Lustre. Although I've always had a wide-ranging interest in all matters Pagan, mystical and spiritual, it's only over the last couple of years that I've started to formulate my beliefs. Hence, the lack of common knowledge amongst my friends and my reluctance to cause offence. As I'm well into the crone category, it's probably high time I knew how to deal with these situations.BigGrin )O(

BigGrin Absolute sense to say Pagan- subsection Wiccan, as opposed to Pagan- Druid, or Pagan- Shaman for instance.

I've just always thought that it made no sence to call oneself a "Christian Wiccan" as the two are complete opposites,Confused but if someone wants to call themseleves as such then so be it ..

I can understand how you're confused about Christian Wiccan. It doesn't seem compatible but it isn't equal to Buddhist Jew.

This is because being a jew isn't just a religion, it also ethnicity.

There are many Atheist Jews, David Baddiel, Stephen Fry, Daniel Radcliffe.

They are ethnically Jewish so it still makes sense.

But as you were saying, Christian Wiccan is a little puzzling.

Saying that, people get confused at Pagan Atheist.

So I just say I'm culturally Pagan which is techinally correct, and Atheist Humanist mainly.

Hi! I'm no expert on the topic and would describe myself as neither a pagan nor a wiccan (I am a deist) I also refuse to practise any religion (although I was christened, so apologies to those who are if what I'm going to write is incorrect or offensive to you.

Right, according to some books I read about paganism and wicca, these religions are not religions in the same way as the 6 main ones in the sense that there is no doctrine saying 'you must do this or that' apart from a few important principles, such as the Law of Rede. Instead, they are pathways which each person can adapt according to his/her individual beliefs, many of which do fit in with the main religions. E.g. The Law of Rede is similar to the idea of Karma (which Buddhists and Hindus also believe in) and christians, pagans, jews, etc also share the view of a divine being. What they disagree on is the nature of it (e.g. one or many) and what name (e.g. God, Allah, God and Goddess, 'the divine', Elohim). This is why many people, such as christians do find that they can continue to hold their religious beliefs while exploring the wicca pathways and label themselves accordingly.

Could someone clear this up for me coz i'm mega confused Confused Huh I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic!! Laugh

Also, history has shown us that it is perfectly possible to believe in more than religion. E.g Conversos (Jews who had to convery to catholicism then paganism due to the spanish inquisition-if not, they died).

Hope this clears things up!

PS. I also apologise if I've offended any other religious person with this answer.

@hertie- if u refuse to practice religion then that is your personal choice, im not offended by you at all! As i said in my quote, what really confuses me is that a person wanting to be a chrisrian wiccan when both religions are total opposites of each other, that is what im most opposed to, coz i just think it wrong imo, but if they want to do that and call themselves that, then so be it! Im not too fussed in the end!!

Merry Meet All!!

I am fairly new to living Wicca, but I would just like to add that, for me, one of the things I love about Wicca is the fact they we are tolerant of other people's views and beliefs, and although i may agree that I can't quite see how someone can be a Christian Wiccan, so long as they are living with truth, integrity and honesty, and harming no one else, they can call themselves what they wish. My understanding is that all Gods and Goddesses are different faces of the one, so any worship or adherence will be understood by the deities involved and taken with the intent that was meant by the person involved. At least I hope this is true! Anyway, that's my view on the matter.

Love, light and blessings

As mad as it sounds,

There are Christian Druids about, for instance, did you know the late Queen mum was a druid, as was Sir Winston Churchill and I believe I am right in saying the Old Archbishop of Canterbury was as well.

You can imagine my surprise when I discovered the above in one of my books on DruidryConfused

Ok, just to clear this up, "Druid" in the sense that the Queen Mother and Archbishop are one means "promoter of Welsh language and culture." They are cultural Druids, NOT religious ones. So they're not closet pagans, they are/were both very VERY Christian!

About the Archbishop

Different types of druidry

Wiki article on the Gorsedd - cultural druidry
