The best way I know to discover your totem animal(s) is through a pathworking, which is a kind of guided mediatation that you finish off.

Basically, you get into a deep meditative state (counting down is a good way of doing this), and visualize a tree, which represents the world tree, which holds together the upper worlds, the middle worlds, and the lower worlds. Really get your senses involved, feel the ground under your feet, feel the tree bark, smell the air, feel it and hear it blowing through the tree's branches, and really be there in your mind.

Touch the tree and ask that it show you the way to meet your animal totem. And walk round the tree. You may see an opening in the roots, a door, a pool of water; any way for you to travel to your totem.

Go through the opening and follow the tunnels beneath the tree until you see a light that takes you to where your animal totem(s) might be.

Usually, any animal that you encounter, or flashes through your mind, more than 3 or so times, and is of a friendly nature (as in, isn't being aggressive towards you), can be seen as an animal totem.

Once you've met your totem, talk with it, interact with it, and learn from it.

Once you're done, head back the way you came till you're back at the tree. Let it fade from your mind as you bring yourself back to the physical world.

I'd reccomend visiting and interacting with your totem every now and then, so you can build up a good relationship. And eventually, they'll likely pop in and out of your life. You'll either see an animal of the spieces that your totem is part of, or their image my flash in you mind along with some insight, or (as I get sometimes) you may think a question to yourself, and have an instant response along with the image of your totem.

I'd also recommend this method to find your 'inner temple' so you can really get deeply involved when working magick and ritual on the 'inner planes'.
