my daughter is P7 and has always been drawn to witchcraft.Even as a small child she saw faeries. She is fiercely proud to call herself a witch & I have always encouraged her to follow her feelings. However her school are very dismissive when she tells them what she believes. Her present teacher tries to force her to go to church and is always really nasty when she refuses.I think if we were Muslim or Jewish they would be falling over themselves to accomodate her.Any ideas on how best to handle these uptight ,presbyterian "good christian" women!

I spent three years at a Catholic school, so i understand how surpressive christians can sometimes be. And this was back when I was a Christian myself. Religion is always a sensitive subject, especially in places of education and the workplace. I am assuming that you are a witch yourself, and therefore had the foresight to not send your daughter to a strictly Christian school, which would for obvious reasons disapprove of your families' beliefs.

If what I assume is true, then I suggest you should take a look at your daughter's School's Tolerance policy. Every school should have one, and should be able to providen you with a copy of it. Within it should be a paragraph stating something along the lines of the school will not tolerate any form of discrimination against anyone, regardless of race, colour or religion. If you can locate this statement, I suggest you take it to a form of authority within the school that is above the teacher you're dealing with.

If your daughter's teacher is being vile to your daughter to the point that your daughter is uncomfortable in her class, or about talking about her own beliefs and ideas, this teacher is outrightly breaching your daughter's rights within her school, and has absolutely no right to do so.

I know this doesn't sound like a peaceful resolution to this problem and I wish I could advise a peaceful route for you to take. But this teacher has no right to bully your daughter, and bullying is exactly what it is, and bullies need to be stood up to.

Skylight is totally correct, but what I would say is that in most schools they don't classify wicca/pagan etc as a religion. It's one of those really old rules that make no sense in this modern world.

It might help to explain it to the head, or if it goes really far even applying to the local Education Officer at your local council to step in.

But the added problem is that most children seem to go through the witchcraft stage, so you may have to explain that this isn't a fad and is actually her choice in her life and that she isn't mucking about.

It's seriously annoying to have to do it, but it's not going to change while we still have such idiots running the world. The ban on witchcraft may have been lifted quite a long time ago, but the stigma and persecution continues.

One of my nieces has had the same problem, it ended up with my sister moving her school. I hope it doesn't come to that for you.

Blessings
