Hi Molly, I've been a Wiccan for a few years (8 years give or take a month lol), so I hope I can be of help : )
right, to begin with, an altar.
for practicing magick, technically, an altar is not at all necessary, however, for the beginner, an altar is a focal point for you so you can concentrate on your working more : )
As for permanant tools, what you'll see most frequently on a Wiccan altar are a Pentacle in the centre (this can be anything from a circle of paper with a pentagram on it to a big copper disc with a pentagram and an assortmant of other symbols) this is used to consecrate and bless items placed on it, also representing the element of earth
a wand and or athame (black handled, blunt, double edged knife), to direct energy and cast circle, and to represent Air (the wand) and Fire (athame) though sometimes these associations are swapped depending on the individual
Small containers (mine are egg cups hehe) for consecrated water and salt, to consecrate items placed on the pentacle
A chalice is often on there if there's room to represent the element of water and for communion
Illuminator candles are usually there to represent the Goddess and the God, but aren't entirely necessary, though they do serve a practical purpose if you don't have the lights on lol!
Depending on where you have your altar (eg if it's in the centre of an intended circle, or along the perimeter at a quater point and if you have quater candles at the elemental quaters around your circle depends if you have an appropriate elemental candle on your altar or not
If there's room incense can be put on there as well, but if it's nearby that's fine
so
the short version of my ramble is that the most common items on a Wiccan altar are an Athame, a Wand, a Pentacle, Vessel of Water, Vessel of Salt, a Chalice, Illuminator Candles and if appropriate a Quater candle.
and, finally, as if I wasn't going on long enough, a really simple simple altar can consist of a cloth with representations of the 4 elements like a feather, a shell, a candle and a crystal
sorry that was really long winded, and it probably didn't need to be, just wanted to make sure the info was there, though I'm sure you already knew most of it already : )
I hope I've been of some help to you, and if there's anything else you want to know and think I can help then just start a post with my name as the subject : )
Bright Blessings!

Hey Mollyee, I'm newish to wicca too. I've read loads of books on the subject over the past five years and I'm only just starting to think about setting up my own alter as I've moved home quite a few times and have'nt really been able to do anything. Although every book I've read says that you should try to make things like your wand and wooden boxes to keep things safe yourself, it really isn't that practical in modern society (trying to find a tree lately in a city center can be a nightmare!), thats why I'm so glad I've stumbled upon this site.
Can anybody tell me if all public libraries have like two books on anything occcult related or is it just Sunderland? With the economy the way it is, I'd rather borrow them than have to buy, and I can never find any in charity shops.

My nearest library has quite a few books on paganism, even if they are a bit...well...I dunno, they could be better
I just tend to go into a book shop and read while I'm there lol! My local waterstones actually has a study table right near the MBS section!

Hi i feel really sorry for you guys. see both my parents are wiccan. its passed down through the family generation to generation, so naturally im wiccan but my parents say i have to find out about it all for myself. A quest basically. My mum is also having problems affording all her ingredients, but she still manages to help me fill in pages in the familys book of shadows. im really gratefull to everything she does for me though. lol sorry for rambling
