NOTICE

The information shown is intended to be for general guidance only. Even among health professionals, opinions will vary on how to interpret the significance of BMI. Nevertheless, we have tried to use demarcation bands that broadly represent the published body of knowledge.

In Nov 2007 the government published research findings which suggests there is an increased risk of various forms of Cancer if your BMI is over 25.

If you are overweight (the trend in Western society is not encouraging), then you really do run the risk of significantly shortening your life if you don't do something about it.

CAUTION - Before you embark on any new exercise or dietary regime, we would always advise that you seek professional medical advice (particularly if you are seriously overweight).

We recommend a visit to the British Heart Foundation website for further information and guidance.

WARNING: We accept no liability for how you interpret or use the information provided here. We stress this is just a guide and there is no substitute for seeking professional advice from a qualified medical practitioner if you have concerns about your weight or other health condition.
Interpretation
Here is a brief summary of how to interpret what your BMI means:

Less Than 18
This indicates you have a low amount of body fat. In an athlete, this can be desirable but if not, you may have overdone the dieting a bit. A BMI this low can result in a lowering your body's defensive system and so put you at risk of all sorts of ailments. Consider gaining a little weight through good diet and use exercise to increase your muscle mass.

Between 18 - 22
This indicates the ideal, healthy amount of body fat and is associated with living longest, and having the lowest incidence of serious illness. It also seems to be the ratio where the body shape is perceived by many to be the most aesthetically pleasing.

Between 22 - 25
This is considered to be in the acceptable range, and is generally associated with a good healthy lifestyle, sensible diet and regular exercise.

Between 25 - 30
You are over weight and should start to correct the problem now. Find ways to lower your weight, through diet and exercise. If you let your weight increase much further you will be increasing the risk of suffering from a variety of potentially very serious illnesses.

Between 30 - 40
You have a serious weight problem, since at this level you are classed as morbidly obese. This means there is a greatly increased risk that your body will start to malfunction (Diabetes, Heart disease, circulatory problems, gall blader trouble and even some cancers are all a possibilities). You really need to do something about shedding a few pounds (down the calories and up the exercise). Start now and don't give up - you are worth it.

Over 40
No easy way to put this, but at this level, you are classed as extremely obese.  You may already be seeing signs of failure in your body's systems and because every thing has become so much more difficult, you probably tend to take even less exercise which will make the situation even worse. Do something about it now and improve your chances of longevity. We would recommend you get a thorough health check and if necessary some professional advice on how to lose weight - Act now before its too late.
